What is Cryotherapy?

Cryotherapy is a very simple, safe and commonly performed procedure in our OPD for effective removal of benign and malignant skin lesions. In this procedure, there is controlled destruction of target tissues by freezing using liquid nitrogen ie the lesions are treated at the cellular level.

Procedure:
Cryotherapy also known as cold therapy is used to treat array of benign and malignant skin lesions. Cryotherapy is  also widely used to relieve muscle pain, sprains and swelling .The main agent used in this procedure is liquid nitrogen. Liquid nitrogen filled in a hand held device is sprayed on the area to be treated until the formation of solid ice crystals.
First cycle:FREEZE-This could be from 1-30 seconds, depending on the size and depth.

THAW

After the first freeze cycle, the tissue is allowed to thaw for about 30 seconds.

Second FREEZE

Now the second freeze cycle will begin. The tissue will freeze faster than during the first freezing cycle.

Is the Procedure painful?

This procedure is absolutely painless though a little bit of burning sensation or discomfort is experienced in patients who have poor pain threshold. The intensity of discomfort varies with each session. Even children can tolerate the mild discomfort  without topical anaesthesia. Topical anesthesia is a choice in those patients with less pain threshold.

Duration of treatment:

Since this procedure can also be done without local anesthesia, it is less time consuming.
Each session may take anywhere between 5 seconds -20 min depending on the size of lesion, number of lesions and  tolerance of the patient. Multiple sittings may be needed depending on the characteristics of lesion being treated.
