Stretch Marks

What are Stretch marks?

These are the scars that appear as linear thin lines on the shoulders, breasts, underarms, abdomen, hips, thighs, and back of lower limbs of calf muscles. These are usually found in pregnant women or in people who have gained weight considerably quickly.Except for the aesthetic disfigurement , stretch marks are not a physical threat and most of it usually dont fade over time.

They appear as pink to purple lines initially. In dark skinned individuals the lines are seen as dark lines . They gradually turn into silvery or light colored lines which are more difficult to treat. They are neither painful nor harmful. There are many options to reduce the appearance of stretch marks.

Causes:

  • Weight fluctuations
  • Genetics
  • Pregnancy
  • Weightlifting
  • Hormonal imbalance
  • Topical and oral steroid overuse
  • Accelerated growth throughout adolescence.

Stretch Marks after Pregnancy

Stretch marks after pregnancy are particularly common. Majority of women develop stretch marks on the legs, abdomen, hips, and other body parts that have been affected by the weight gained during pregnancy.

As pregnancy progresses, the skin starts expanding and stretches to its limit and cause tiny tear in the supporting layers of the skin, which later turn out to be stretch marks, appearing as glossy, white streaks.

Majority of women with stretch marks after pregnancy opt for laser stretch mark removal to eliminate this.

Treatments

Stretch marks can be treated using deep chemical peels, microneedling and  lasers  when they are in the initial phase.
The different types of Treatments available are:

  • Pulsed-Dye Laser: works on fresh stretch marks
  • Fractional Nonablative Laser: effectively improve the skin’s appearance with white or old stretch marks.
  • Microdermabrasion
  • Laser Skin Tightening: brings back the skin’s firmness.
  • Plateletrich Plasma (PRP) Injections and other collagen stimulators
The earlier the stretch mark is treated, the better the result be.
